Quesada Gardens Initiative is a not-for-profit, an informal group of neighbors, a grassroots social and environmental change strategy, and a beautiful place. Quesada Gardens Initiative has grown small acts of courage into a network of projects grown from the grassroots and led by locals. It has created an oasis of calm and sustainability where crime and blight had ruled, all at little cost to the public. The group has become emblematic of positive change in challenged urban settings, and ill …

I want to create an intentional community for animal lovers who want to travel. We will take care of each others' pets. Additional goals are to live more sustainably (grow vegetables, have chickens and a goat, share a car or a truck, use solar power) and more sociably (share meals, conversations, morning yoga, perhaps massages and a hottub). Creative people with experience in gardening and construction are particularly welcome.
Urban homesteading can be a fun and fulfilling way to decrease your carbon footprint while learning useful methods for producing your own wholesome home staples. We will be exploring canning & preserving, animal husbandry and beekeeping, gardening and mycology, foraging and gleaning, home crafting and sewing, permaculture practices, and the use of native plants for both culinary and medicinal uses.
Shanon Dean and Rebecca Miller are the original duo behind the 30 Something Dames. We’re just a couple of young crafty, thrifty and adventurous ladies. Shanon puts “Suzy Homemaker” to shame and Rebecca is often referred to as “Becky Crocker”. Shanon has also started an Urban Homestead with her husband and they have 27 laying chickens, 20 meat chickens, rabbits, and well on their way to getting goats, muscovy ducks, and bees. There are 34 fruit trees, veggie gardens galore and composting bin …
We did our first meetup to improve a pathway in Oakland on Sunday, May 20th, and it was a success. Three days before the meetup I was the only "Yes" RSVP and was ready to cancel the event. However, then 2 others signed up and showed up. Then someone we did not know, but is a close neighbor saw us and joined us in removing the weeds. Our team of 4 did a great job as you may see in our photos. We hope to fill Oakland's need to improve the city's many hidden pathways and stairways. At first we will …
We're a social group of people that are interested in getting together once a month to chat about honeybees, share books and ideas about honey, community, and wax! This is a brand new group to get people excited about urban beekeeping and to increase the honeybee population in San Francisco and the entire Bay Area. Right now honeybees are threatened by disease and "colony collapse disorder", we need to learn more about bees and how to help them, and make sure they are here to pollinate the f …

Hi! I am starting this group in the hopes of finding some fellow foragers and urban gleaners to go on some outings with out here in Contra Costa and in the East Bay. We will forage for wild edibles fruits and vegetables, fungi, and wild herbs and greens. We will research and plan outings for foraging in public lands and parks, untended residential lots, and whatever other fruit we can gain access to without violating good etiquette and ethics. Note: Due to the logistics and such of organ …

“Wherever we set foot, it was Your street. Whatever corner we turned, it was Your name in the air. We said: ‘Surely there must be a road leading elsewhere?’ But every road we found, it led to You.” - Ismail Anqarawari, follower of Ibn Arabi and Rumi One of Ibn Arabi's poems expresses the focus of this group: "O Marvel! A garden amidst the flames! My heart has become capable of every form. It is a pasture for Gazelles, A convent for Christian monks, A temple for idols and th …
Walking or hiking. Meet other local people who are interested in walking or hiking for fitness and learning about San Francisco's history, including its movie history. This walking group is unique. We put health 1st and history 2nd. We keep our group together. We go on many different urban walks, in the best areas, that vary greatly in distance, stair climbing, and amount of history facts. We walk at a leisurely pace to enjoy the scenery. Sometimes at a walk's end we have an optional dinner tog …

Good news California! At least one legalization initiative will be decided by voters in 2010. The Tax & Regulate Cannabis 2010 initiative has enough signatures to qualify for the November 2010 election. The proposal would legalize possession of up to one ounce of marijuana for California adults 21 and older. Residents could cultivate marijuana gardens up to 25 square feet. Local governments would determine whether to permit marijuana sales within their boundaries. More info at http://ww …
